The Gow School in New York state prepares students with dyslexia related learning difficulties for college. Along with its use of small classes of 4-6 students and individualized learning plans, the staff at Gow has recognized the importance of digital whiteboards as a crucial tool for visual communication in order to support the learning if their students with special needs.
The school uses a 75-inch InGlass™ display from Dell in classroom settings together with the Room Whiteboard and FlatFrog Online Whiteboarding App (which students access via the web on their tablets or laptops) to meet their particular challenges. It was very easy for the teachers to adopt because the display has the intuitive feel of a regular dry-erase board, and it provides all the additional advantages of a digital medium besides. For example, once prepared, lesson templates can be reused as many times as needed without having to erase and redraw from scratch, and basic templates can easily be modified to accommodate each student’s individualized learning plan.
From the students’ point of view, the advantage is to be able to access the board on their devices, which some find more comfortable and convenient than crowding around a physical whiteboard. Many find the use of their tablets comfortable and familiar, which puts them at ease. Together, the room and the online application provide the teachers and the students with a hybrid whiteboard experience.
The Gow school’s success story underlines the flexibility of online whiteboards paired with the FlatFrog app to meet unique organizational circumstances such as those faced by teachers and staff there.
